all the above answers are correct.I have been learning the violin for about 5 years. I am teaching myself now but for the first year I had lessons with a qualified teacher.It is extremely important that you do this ; even one lesson every two weeks is okay.How you hold the violin and the bow is crucial to producing a nice sound.So much can go wrong; you need somebody to correct your mistakes. I taught myself to play guitar without a teacher but that is a totally different thing !
